This stand, taken in 1982 during a time of great crisis in several Central American nations, was a commitment to give visibility to the inhuman and immoral treatment of political refugees. The congregation committed to holding the United States government accountable to U.S. and international laws and agreements and to calling for correction of the conditions that create political refugees. Over time this stand has broadened to include working for just immigration reform.
