August 11th our Catholic Church celebrates Saint Clare of Assisi, the first woman to follow Saint Francis of Assisi in Gospel living. This statue of Saint Clare is located in the main entrance of our Motherhouse. She is holding a monstrance in the form of a cross on which is written the letters “IHS”
A monstrance is a vessel used to show the consecrated host. The word “monstrance” is related to our English word “demonstrate” which means “to show clearly” The monstrance pictured is located in Christ the King Adoration Chapel adjacent to our Motherhouse chapel.
“IHS” is a monogram of the name of Jesus. These letters are in the center of the ring given to a woman as she publicly proclaims her profession of vows in our Religious Congregation.
Clare’s words: “Gaze upon Christ Consider Christ Contemplate Christ Imitate Christ” are a clear reminder how to live our contemplative active lives as Sisters of St Francis of Assisi
